After much research, amongst the “Big Three” (US Law Shield, USCCA and CCW Safe) use-of-force liability protection companies, I decided, for my personal protection, to join CCW Safe. So why did I choose CCW Safe?

Before we take a deep dive into this subject, CCW Safe is may not be the right choice for everyone. Each of the three companies in question all has their own pros and cons. I will try to summarize a few important factors for me below. The bottom line is that what is most important to me, may not be a such a high priority for you.  Please do your own due diligence, then make an educated choice.

For me, here are some Pros:

  • The owners and directors of the companies are all formal law enforcement and criminal attorneys. They are well-regarded in the shooting and instructor community.  My colleagues, Steve Moses and John Valentine spoke highly about this company.  They are very reputable and I like the fact they are completely transparent in their marketing materials and upfront about their coverage.  I have experienced, in the past, with some companies. Sometimes it’s like pulling teeth in order to obtain something as simple as the actual legal contract. These companies often use vague language to describe what they do, instead of having the actual legal document readily available.  I don’t like that!
  • One of my main reason to choose CCW Safe is because their National Trial Attorney, Don West. He is a leading defensive attorney in the country, who successfully defended George Zimmerman.
  • They allow you to choose your own competent defensive attorney.
  • They are the only company that offered an optional, $1M “dedicated civil liability” (judgement and settlement) coverage.
  • They offer unlimited criminal and civil legal costs that include mistrial, re-trial and appeals. Be careful of some companies with a “recoup” clause. If there is any plea or settlement taking place, they may stop the coverage until they “recoup” what is already spent.
  • They offer a boot-on-the-ground “Critical Response Team” consisting of a formal homicide detective to help the client manage the criminal investigation process.
  • Bail bond coverage up to $1M.

As for the Cons:

  • On the surface, CCW Safe is seemingly more expensive than some other companies. However, CCW Safe’s coverage is more extensive and inclusive of many features such as “multi-state”, expert witness expenses that other companies will charge as “optional”.
  • They do not cover incidents that occur by “invited guests” and “domestic relations”

Without any question, I recommend my students to obtain a use-of-force liability protection plan.  Please do your homework and choose wisely!

In full disclosure, since I joined CCW Safe, I have become an affiliate of the company. I will receive compensation if you decide to join the company (FYI, if you join the other two companies, I will receive compensation from them as well).
